About these prices

Forecourts report their prices through the UK government's Fuel Finder scheme, and we check for new ones all day. The typical price is the middle price across 7,944 stations: half are cheaper, half dearer.

How UK fuel prices are set

The wholesale cost of fuel follows crude oil, which is traded in US dollars. On top of that the government adds fuel duty (52.95p a litre) and 20% VAT, which together make up roughly half of what you pay. Retailers then add their own margin, which varies by brand and by place.

Why prices differ between stations

Prices can differ by 10p a litre or more between nearby stations. Supermarket forecourts (Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury's, Morrisons) are often the cheapest because fuel brings shoppers in. Motorway services are usually the dearest, and rural stations cost more to supply than busy town ones.

How to pay less

Check before you set off: the cheapest station within a few minutes is often 5p to 10p a litre less than the nearest one. On a 50 litre tank that is £2.50 to £5. Avoid filling up on the motorway, and use a supermarket or fuel loyalty card if you have one.
